Don’t look now, but the Cleveland Cavaliers are flirting with a hat trick of second‑round exits. Their Game 1 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday reinforced a troubling pattern. Sure, the series could still swing back in Cleveland’s direction, but the more realistic outcome is another Eastern Conference Semifinals exit followed by a hard look in the mirror.
And if the Cavaliers decide to shake up the core, big changes could follow. That’s where the Charlotte Hornets come in.
Charlotte’s most painfully obvious upgrade spot remains the frontcourt, and Evan Mobley fits that need perfectly. There’s another bold trade target in Cleveland worth discussing, but there’s a real argument that Mobley would be one of the most impactful offseason additions Jeff Peterson could pursue.
Adding a premier defensive talent like Evan Mobley is invaluable
If the Cavaliers can’t get over the hump in the postseason again, it’s fair to assume someone will be on the chopping block. Mobley was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, and he has exceeded expectations.
Mobley was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2025. Any player who’s achieved that is so important to their team’s success on one end of the floor. While he didn’t repeat this year due to Victor Wembanyama being an alien in that department, Mobley is still recognized as one of the league’s premier defenders.
In the regular season, Mobley was fourth in blocks per game (1.7). And while Ryan Kalkbrenner wasn’t far off at 1.5 blocks per game, Mobley is a scheme-versatile defender who has a deeper offensive bag.
Per Cleaning the Glass, Mobley’s on/off differential of +4.2 ranks in the 75th percentile in the league. With Moussa Diabate showing he can do a lot of the dirty work, adding Mobley next to him could be an ideal pairing.
He’s an elite rim protector who can decently stretch the floor. The hope would be he could play full-time center for the Hornets.
The Hornets have the assets to make a large move in the offseason
The Hornets could stay put and be conservative in their team-building efforts, opting to draft talent and make smaller moves to build out the roster. However, grabbing an established elite talent could be the move that vaults Charlotte into the upper echelon of Eastern Conference teams.
Peterson will have ample opportunities in the offseason. It just depends on who flames out in the playoffs. While priority number one should be avoiding a Coby White departure, the second priority is arguably to acquire a high-end talent that immediately moves the needle — like Mobley.
